TeamKC Roundtable Recap | June 2024

by Carolyn Popper | Jun 27, 2024

TeamKC Roundtables bring together a network of HR and recruiting professionals to discuss relevant topics. This month, Garmin hosted the TeamKC network to discuss relocation alongside mobility specialists — there was much to share!

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Recruiting top talent means relocating candidates on occasion, a task companies must learn to navigate.

  • The increasing cost of living everywhere poses a challenge for individuals and companies alike. Although, the KC region remains competitive with a lower cost of living than the U.S. average.

  • Partners including realtors, moving companies, etc., can aid in a candidate’s decision to relocate.

THE DETAILS

  • Cost is Top of Mind

    • Cost of living is increasing everywhere, and it's top of mind for everyone.

    • In KC, the cost of housing remains below the national average. Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Kansas City is less costly than in Nashville, Boston, San Francisco, Denver and the national average.

    • Relocation is a cost sometimes required to put the best person in a role, and it can be $$$. Pro tip: When assessing the cost, address big-ticket items like instruments and safes upfront.

  • Relocation Partners Are Key

    • Lean on your relocation partners, realtors, moving companies, organization and decluttering programs, etc. to aid the candidate in decision-making. In many cases, third-party organizations can help answer lifestyle questions a recruiter can’t — such as interest in religion, school systems, clubs, etc.

    • A real estate partner may provide a candidate with relocation support to inform about the area. For example, providing a collection of bike trails for an avid bike rider might help a candidate reach a decision.

    • Companies may steer candidates to residential areas near their place of work, whereas a real estate expert may open the door to options that better suit their needs.

  • TeamKC Helps Seal the Deal

    • Candidates considering relocation are eager to know everything about where they might be moving — TeamKC is here to help!

    • With a robust kit of relocation tools, from KC Options and customized guides to cost-of-living comparisons, TeamKC helps tell the KC story.

    • Companies can create a collection of these resources to provide their candidates during the recruitment process, even sharing them in gift baskets upon arrival to the region.
