KC Delivers Speed to Market for eCommerce

by Mary Rooney | Oct 05, 2020

As demand for online purchasing grows, the location of distribution and fulfillment centers becomes even more important. Located at the crossroads of North America, both in terms of population and geography, the Kansas City region offers a strong advantage for eCommerce operations. Kansas City is a move-in ready market with existing building inventory and a selection of vertical-ready sites.

Over the past several years, Kansas City has attracted numerous eCommerce operations including Overstock.com, CVS Health, Amazon, Dollar Tree, Walmart, Turn5, and most recently Chewy, inc., Urban Outfitters, Inc., and BoxyCharm.

On top of that, UPS has made substantial long-term investments in facilities that support KC and surrounding areas. Most recently, UPS announced it is expanding its Kansas City presence to support growing eCommerce demand. The expansion at KCI International Airport includes a 534,000-sq.-ft. aircraft apron and a renovation of the existing 50,000-sq.-ft. sorting facility. In addition, FedEx Ground has expanded its large package distribution center within Kansas City's Northland Park.

Available real estate makes the Kansas City region attractive to those companies looking to hit the ground running. Approximately 7 million sq. ft. of industrial space is under construction and an additional 6.1 million sq. ft. is expected to begin construction before the end of 2020. The region also offers a variety of shovel-ready greenfield sites for build-to-suit development.
