June is the height of “kitten season,” making it a fitting National Adopt a Cat Month. While it’s a great time to add a kitten to your family, it is important to remember that cats are not small dogs. As a cat Mom, I love the playfulness and curiosity of cats. They have their own unique personalities and needs.

To create the best environment for your cat, here are a few tips.

• Although many people often think of cats as reserved and independent, cats are social creatures. Cats have the capacity to form strong social bonds with their humans and enjoy routines. It can be very hard on a cat when they are left home alone for an extended period with no social interaction. So, when planning that family vacation, don’t forget to plan for regular checkups on your cat that include social interactions.

• Cats need opportunities for socialization and stimulus. Most dog owners realize the importance of socialization, which is why there are so many opportunities for puppies and dogs through dog parks and doggy daycares. However, many incorrectly assume that cats don’t need opportunities to interact. It is important to provide early exposure to other cats, humans and a variety of environmental stimuli which all benefit a cat’s social behavior and overall cognitive development.

• A quality environment in your home is also crucial. Be sure to provide access to perches and places to hide; a dedicated space for their food, water and litter box; toys that provide an opportunity to play that mimics their natural predatory behavior; and positive and consistent interactions between you and your cat. You want to ensure your home environment provides your cat with the opportunity for natural behaviors, such as climbing, hiding and hunting. 

Adopting from a local shelter is a fantastic way to give a cat a second chance at a loving home. Plus, by adopting, you're not only enriching your own life but also helping to alleviate the burden on overcrowded shelters.

When adding a feline to your family, you’ll also be needing the services of your veterinarian or adding a new one to your roster. Remember that expressing gratitude to veterinary professionals is important as they play a crucial role in ensuring the health and well-being of our furry companions.
