TeamKC Scouting Report | The First One

by Jessica Palm | Feb 19, 2018

Why you’re reading this …
The TeamKC Network is 750+ recruiters, HR execs and community partners strong in the Kansas City area. And let’s be real, there are SO many things happening in the talent space in KC every day, it’s hard to keep up! So, we decided to bring you the TeamKC Scouting Report to give a sneak peek into what we’re hearing at TeamKC, and ways you and your team can get involved in the community. Happy reading! – Jessica & Angela

Rising tides …
Fact: 300,000+ adults in the Kansas City area have some college credit, but no degree. And, when those adults earn a degree, kids in their household are 3x more likely to finish high school, go to college and snag a degree themselves. What is Kansas City doing about this?

Well, there’s this crazy big regional business plan called KC Rising, and it’s focusing not only on these adults and kids, but a few other pretty incredible things happening in our region, too. KC Rising is having its 3-year update next week, you should go.

Teaching teachers …
We’re in a global race for talent, and this race isn’t just for engineering, tech and health care careers, it’s also for educators. Yikes! How do we prepare the future workforce if there aren’t teachers to teach these kids? No worries, The Kauffman Foundation just launched a powerful program with regional partners and to prepare, recruit and retain educators in Kansas City.

In through the out door  …
It’s definitely a bummer with the Harley and P&G news, but manufacturing talent in KC is still in good hands. We’re hearing their skills are in high demand in the market and companies like Faurecia, which just announced 300 jobs, are jumping all over the chance to hire employees.

Fly away …
A new single terminal in the works means new flights for KC. For the first time ever, KCI Airport has nonstop transatlantic service. Icelandair is booking flights now and starts service from KCI on May 25. But, if going to the land of fire and ice isn’t your thing, Southwest and Delta just announced more direct flightsfrom our hometown to places like Raleigh/Durham and Seattle.

See and be seen …
Our friends at Made In KC are rockin’ it. They just opened the Made In KC Café, this hybrid coffee shop, retail space and gallery in the heart of downtown. We may just be a touch biased because they have portraits from our national lifestyle campaign, America’s Creative Crossroads, hanging in the space; thanks for the love!

Did you know KC has an underground denim shop? Neither did we. Denimhound is a super sleek shop bringing new brands to the city. Venture to the River Market, and you’ll find Denimhound in the basement of menswear store, Houndstooth.

If you’re like us, you love KC’s food scene. And we’ve been waiting patiently for three years (yes three) for Jonathan Justus’ new restaurant, Black Dirt. The James Beard Award nominee takes his fine dining more casual while keeping a creative spin on his dishes. He does – after all – want you to feel “ subterranean, like you are of the dirt ” while dining.

Oh by the way …
KC’s Children’s Mercy Hospital is helping pave the way in AI for recruiting. See some press about it herehere and here. And what’s even more cool, is that CMH’s Director of Talent Acquisition and TeamKC Board member, Molly Weaver, is speaking on this very topic at one of the nation’s top talent acquisition conferences in the country, ERE. Mic. Drop.
