2018 – Year in Review

by Mary Rooney | Jan 08, 2019
2018 has been shipped and delivered, and work is underway to optimize 2019 for the Kansas City region. 2018 was a great year for KC with regards to attracting freight-based economic development. The SmartPort team was on the road at major supply chain conferences and industry trade shows talking to our clients about the Kansas City market. Top events included the Retail Industry leaders Association (RILA) supply chain conference and expo, Center for Automotive Research (CAR) annual management briefing and the global Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) conference in Nashville.

In 2018, ecommerce companies continued to recognize the locational advantages of the KC region. Overstock.com opened a 500,000-sq.-ft. facility, and Turn 5 opened a 355,000-sq.-ft. operation. A4, Hopkins Manufacturing and Convey Health Systems also selected the Kansas City region for its locational advantages. The region also welcomed several large manufacturing operations. The automotive sector continued to grow with Faurecia locating a 250,000-sq.-ft. parts manufacturing facility, and CS Manufacturing selecting the region for a 50,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing operation. Dakota Bodies closed out the year with a 75,000-sq.-ft. truck body manufacturing operation. A total of ten freight-based companies choose the Kansas City Market in 2018, creating close to 900 jobs and investing nearly $100 million. Read more about KC freight-based recruitment success.

As we look into 2019, the SmartPort team will continue to lead with knowledge and expertise in these important industry sectors, and the ever-changing supply chain that is critical to our clients’ success.  Our efforts to be the thought leader in supply chain will continue with this year’s FLEX event in April, and the first quarter will see a number of companies selecting the region for new operations. 2019 will be a year of “Forward thinking and Forward execution” at all levels.
